25-28mm Tree suppliers?
Do any of you know where I can get 25-28mm trees from? Preferably not ridiculously expensive and more importantly realistic? If anyone can pass any info on It'd be much appreciated. I thank yo' steve@spcwargamescenery.com http://spcwargamescenery.com/

You might want to try Barry S of this forum. Even though he's based in Oz his rates compare well with UK based suppliers. Giles (& a few others IIRC) have availed themselves of his services, as have I. Lovely & realistic trees. http://www.freewebs.com/leadbear/

Barry S does indeed make excellent trees, and the postage from Oz is not as much as you'd think. In the UK, the best trees around IMHO are from Realistic Modelling, although they are at the pricey end of the scale.

The back garden, especially this time of year. Battlegames latest issue (19) has a good article on making realistic trees with twigs and moss substitutue.

Thanks LT the wife will be pleased with the thumbs up for the article. If you want cheap commercial trees try some of the Chinese sellers on Fleabay, look at the trees in the model chuff-chuff sections, they bulk sell trees - lots of different types and styles, watch out for the scale mind - also they are all spike one, no bases. Seem pretty cheap, forty or fifty for around twenty quid (sorry pounds sterling)

I stock those Chinese trees, though the slightly smaller ones, for N-h0 railways: http://link.marktplaats.nl/280032079 . One caveat: most are with twisted wire armatures, with unfinished trunks. That's no problem when you see them en masse on a table, but in individual larger trees that would be very, very distracting, and I would not consider them for 28mm.

Another option may be to visit your local model railroad shop as companies such as Hornby and Woodland Scenics sell ranges of quite good looking trees although they can appear quite 'light and delicate' if you understand what I mean. I agree with Giles that the best trees around that I've seen for wargaming are from Realistic Modelling Services. They are indeed at the pricey end of the scale which is the reason I started to make my own which were made pretty much the same way as described in the Battlegames article, using twigs gathered from the backyard ;) I've also used some of the cheap Chinese trees for 15mm projects and they come up okay after a bit of work, such as a bit of texture added to the trunk, such as putty, to disguise the twisted wires and some additional flock. I'm not sure if the same processes would work with 28mm versions of these trees. Thanks for the kind words ET and Giles. Steve, please feel free to PM me if you're interested and I'll pass on some info.

SPC I have a pile of model railway trees for sale they are Heki/Noch types. I decided to get exactly what I wanted I'd have to make my own. I use the twisted wire method with rubberised horsehair and foliage applied. Its not the fastest method but I do think they look realistic. I can, and will improve them in my next batch using finer wire. I find them very relaxing to make. If you've time but not much cash I recommend DIY.

I got some good trees off ebay, but I noticed that my local railway model shop is stocking them now for about £6 a box: In the shop they had non-white and not just pines.

Big Dave- 10-12-2009

They are called BACHMANN SCENE SCAPE, and you get 5 in a box.

If you don't mind building em...woodland scenics stuff is very good and not too expenisive. E-scenics does these mail order in the UK.

I've been using Woodland Scenics tree frames then rubberised horsehair suitably roughed up and then flocked. Looks the bees knees to me. I do have some seafoam as well waiting for smoe frankensteinion experimenting but suspect they will be nice but fragile.

Where d'ya get the horsehair from Geoff?

Jon Suth- 10-20-2009

These are the blokes for your horsehair: http://jamiltonupholstery.co.uk/shop_product.asp?dept=10

SPCWargameCreations- 10-20-2009

Thanks for that. Is it the rubberised hair sheet I'll need? Never used this stuff before so forgive my ignorance!
