Desert game mat/terrain
For my Sudan game I need to sort some terrain. I don't have the space to store boards so it has to be some sort of cloth/mat.
The company 'up north' that I got my faux fur from have a 2mm thick stone coloured felt that is my current best option but it might look a bit bland.
Any other options or even suppliers of felt or baize? The Cambridge area is very poor for fabric shops…
have you tried looking at Antenociti's for the Mat-o-War. I got a green one recently and its really good - cost about £15 i think. I'm pretty sure they did a desert one too

That's a great option. They do offer a desert one. Out of stock but looks good. Cost more than felt as I need a big area 5' x 8' but many thanks for that. I'll contact and see when they are expecting a restock. Could be a Christmas present.

I too have a green one, they are top notch.
The mats made by "The Terrain Guy" based in Texas, USA are very nice. International shipping might be costly though. He makes custom sizes on request so we have a 6ft by 24ft mat and two 3ft by 24ft mats that our group uses for convention games that we host.
I plan to buy one of his winter terrain mats soon. They are superb. I will never make terrain squares again. :grr:

Nice mats – shipping to Europe was nearly as much as the mat itself!
When i did the Sudan back in the 80s i used lengths of tan curtain lining (which was a very thin material that hugged the terrain nicely) scattered with sand a la Gilder it looked pretty good.
thats an important point Timmo - Mat-o-War is stiffened in some way which makes it very resilient but it won't work well draped over books etc. to make hills. It rolls up into a tube ok for storage though

I like that – its something simple (and cheapish) that I'm after at this stage. I want to gauge my commitment to gaming the period ie how often I'll play it before spending too much more cash on terrain that I'll only use for this period or before I paint more figures.

Thanks for the advice – that kinda rules out Mat-o war.
Go down the local park and kick all the kids out of the sandpit.
Bob's your uncle!
