Don Featherstone's Wargaming 1961 month-by-month
Given the recent flurry of interest here in Peter Gilder, Bill Lamming and others just thought I'd mention I have just posted an interesting piece by Don Featherstone on his wargaming year in 1961. Originally written for Wargame's Digest in 1962, he republished it in Wargamer's Newsletter 111 from June 1971, which is where I have taken it from (with the author's permission, I should add). You can find it here: http://vintagewargaming.blogspot.com/2009/10/year-with-don.html Regards Clive

I am glad that I have discovered your blog Clive. It is fun reading all of the old school articles from days of yore.

As Don hails from my original 'neck of the woods' he is a wargaming god as far as i'm concerned. It was sad to see that he sold off most of his collection a few years back, but perhaps he was afflicted by that urge of ...er...veteran wargamers to pass on their figures during their lifetime and ensure favourite units don't go in the bin or to a car bootsale when you finally shuffle off to the great lead mountain in the sky!

fantastic blog Clive - i've bookmarked it as well. This is a great entry - i particularly like March. Isn't it just a pain when CBS ask you to make some scenery for Field Marshal Montgomery :)

Great re-posting, Clive; thanks for the trip back down memory lane! :hi:

Wonderful blog. I have very fond memories of Gilders influential painting and I too had gloss varnished figures. I love the way the colours were enriched but you had to paint with more contrast to make it work well. When matt varnishing came in vogue I dutifully followed suit and found that my early painting looked very crude with its gloss, that had in effect, created another whole layer of natural highlights. Still if we were into gloss figures thing how much bother it would save. Its also very nice to see that these models have survived and are still much loved.
