Friday Poll: Rules sets
Do you tend to stick to one company's rules sets for the periods you play?
Jeremy- 11-05-2009
I generally like different rules sets for different periods, though lately I am finding that any new periods I start up are using the Lardy rules. Or is it that I'm starting the new periods because of the Lardy rules and the corrupting influence of Rich's Yahoo Group? :eh: :eh: :eh:

I like rules that reflect the period - if they'ere from one company (hi Rich!) then so much the better but thats not necessary.
I'd watch out for the llama personally, he gorges himself on rulesets........
LardyRich- 11-06-2009
I ONLY play Lardy rules, but only the ones that aren't published yet. Sadly once we publish a rule set I rarely get to play it again, only when we take the games round the shows.
I have actually been invited to Loughton to show the lads there how to play Sharp Practice, and I am really looking forward to revisiting what to me is now an old friend.
Actually I am hoping to buy the Black Powder rules at Crisis tomorrow, so who knows, I make get to play summat else for a change.

Good lord I can't even remember how many sets I have at this point, tend to packrat them.

I have found that I hate reading rules and am incapable of understanding them when I do.

I own loads of different rulesets, but in terms of playing I generally only use a few. I tend to use the Warmaster/BKC/CWC system for the little fellows, and the Warhammer varients for skirmishing.

Voted for the third option - best impression. Only really interested in three periods now - WSS, AWI and Napoleonic (and for the last-named, mainly the "linear" armies/periods).
WSS - Several sets, including Ga Pa, Captain-General, Principles of War, Picquet and Lace Wars - for some reason, base sizes tend to be pretty similar across all of these, hence it is a fairly "catholic" collection. However, my preferred sets for WSS are Charles Grant's (snr) Wargame and Lawford's/Young's Charge rules as these allow for bigger units and more fun.
AWI/NAPOLEONIC - By coincidence, my favourite AWI and Napoleonic rules sets (British Grenadier and General de Brigade) are from the same stable - again because they indulge my preference for bigger units. Then there is Sharp Practice for lower-level games in H&M.

I only buy rules with no words

There was no option do you collect rules for a period. I collect rules. I will try any set that catches my eye.

I tend to try out new sets and stick with them for a time and then write my own. Since I never base up or organise according to rules army lists anyway, its inevitable that I always go down this route.

I'll use anyone's rule set that reflects the period and is straight-forward to play. Not much to ask I know, but DBA/M, TFL and Fire & Fury meet those requirements fairly regularly. But I'm open to anything :)

All my 10mm WW2 to Modern games are played with with BKC/CWC but in 28mm I wonder between two fat lardies rules and ROE.
Timmo- 11-12-2009
I've pretty much (but not totally) gravitated towards the TFL rule sets. They tend to give the sort of fluid games that I enjoy most of all.
jmts- 11-12-2009
I must have something like 150+ rule sets collected over the last 30+ years.
There are rule families with variants for different periods where I have played more than one period, I have often felt that I couldn't really sense the different flavour of the period over the strength of the rule mechanisms. (The one exception, to my mind, seems to be WAB and it's specific sub-period books)
Consequently I tend to have a favoured discrete set or sets for a period just give the sense of a different game.
Ancients - 15mm - Might of Arms, 25/28mm WAB
Medieval - As above but add Bloody Barons
Renaissance - Currently POW but looking for a variant
7YW - Minden Rose (possibly Might and Reason)
Napoleonic - Shako
ACW - Fire and Fury (sometimes CWB)
Colonial - POW (but thinking about re-basing to utilise TSATF)
FPW - yet to find a satisfactory set
