New WI (the AWI one)
Not sure if anyones already posted on this but I picked up the latest WI and its a cracker. Bare in mind that it ticks two boxes in particular for me this month. I have a mild interest in AWI so as its a themed issue it has some nice things that maybe wouldn't excite the grogs like Giles etc but certainly hits the spot for me. Also it has a nice WW2 (my era) battle report albeit a FOW (naturally) one. I've always nicely done Bat-Reps. Wargames Journal ran a terrific WW2 28mm one a few years ago. So big thumbs up from me this time around. Have to admit the recent ancients one left me cold.

AWI is one of my periods and I thought it was going to be a bit tame, but I found it enjoyable as the articles were well written, especially the one on game design for Guildford Courthouse.

Galloping Major- 11-03-2009

Yes, better than I expected too. Nice that it concentrated on the was in the south.

i quite enjoyed it too. Some of the history was light as you would expect. I also thought the Guilford Courthouse thing was interesting since I enjoy articles that discuss the practical gaming issues around recreating a battle (rather than just a map and a list of units)

Since AWI isn't my thing, I found it readable but not as good as the previous month. The article on the Black Powder rules was interesting. Seems to regard an 8 foot table as 'small', which means some people must have bigger tables than me......

I'd didn't mind it, but it only took me half an hour to flip through as I'm not that interested in the AWI, seems quite light on adverts or is that me?

I'd didn't mind it, but it only took me half an hour to flip through as I'm not that interested in the AWI, seems quite light on adverts or is that me? Seems light on advertising as well. I used to advertise occasionally but won't now as they charge to layout ads (unlike MW) and I simply don't have the time to layout my own adverts... and won't pay £50 on top of the advert rate for them to do it. I have bought a couple of issues but find the magazine slightly boring in that all the articles use the same typeface for the headings (making them look like FOW) and find the articles are usually history-lite with a bit of wargaming... Not really my style of hobby I guess... Mike

Peewee- 11-03-2009

Not a bad issue, but I'm still a little uncertain about the dossier method. The problem is that it approaches each subject in such a general way that if you're into the period anyway you're not going to learn anything new, and if you're not into the period it's so wishy-washy that there's no real hook to capture ones interest. Maybe I'm just being too critical though. I see next issue has some Vietnam stuff in it. I'll reserve my judgement until then...

Giles- 11-03-2009

I was about to say what Peewee said, but less eloquently. The problem with the dossier approach, and WSS falls victim to this all the time, is that the general introduction that always starts off the dossier is too basic and generalised to be of any real use. Most people will know at least something about the period and the impression you get is of student-ish history used simply as page filler.

Eclaireur- 11-03-2009

The so-called dossier approach is also soooooo Mid-1980s Miniature Wargames :coffee: For most periods, if people want the bare facts about the main battles in a campaign and who fought in them they just go to the net. EC

The interweb has wrecked the porn magazine business as well. Err... So I'm told.

geoffb- 11-05-2009

Ah well Boo to you lot then cos I enjoyed it. :0) I also think its an improvement over the last (5?) years of WI's Interested if anyone thinks the same or not?

bangorstu- 11-05-2009

Definitely. I think it's the best magazine out there at the moment.

valleyboy- 11-05-2009

Its 'gooder" than it used to be Stu but I think for me its the weakest of the newer issues- a statement that I suppose reflects my interests

Duck Crusader- 11-05-2009

Gotta say it one of the only ones I never miss an issue of.
