Painting White AFV's
I've got a little side-project running at the mo that needs some white 'UN' AFV's. I've never painted all white stuff before. Has anyone got any hints and tips? Thanks chaps and chapesses!

Don't forget the big yellow stripe down the back...

Uncalled for Duck, and frankly a slur on some exceptionally brave men and women.

Just because I'm feeling crabby, I'll point out the UN have ungone combat operations in Congo recently - search for MONUC, the vehicles seem to be painted white despite doing some fighting. And you get the charm of using Guatemalan gunships.... Oh, and of course I can remember the US armed forces being exceptionally glad to see some white-painted armour on a certain occasion in Mogadishu....

If you'd worn the Blue Beret, and been in the sh*t yourself, you'd never say that, Duck. Drive on.

Etranger- 11-03-2009

There ar a few assumptions to be made. The UN vehicles tended to be workshop painted rather than whitewashed so the white didn't wear off so quickly & was usually more neatly applied. That said, there could be oversplash onto tyres & tools, which may have been removed. Wheels & lower hull may not get painted. White won't stay that way for long, with dust & mud splattering being very quickly apparent. Areas of high traffic will wear, showing the underlying camouflage paint quite quickly. I'd use a fairly 'pure' white as a base coat, perhaps with a touch of dark blue or black, then a thin blackwash, highlighting with a very light gray & then dust, mud, rainstreaks etc to taste. DCs comments not withstanding, I think this says "now fuck off and behave" quite well! And who makes figures for these?

Bryce - are you saying you wore the blue beret ? I so that's something we have in common apart from the Wagram game ;) Of course, I know the Canadians have a distinguished history in that regard... Duck - what you've got to factor in is how impossibly difficult the political mandates are of so many of these UN missions. It leaves the soldiers, quite often literally, between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Etranger- 11-03-2009

I remember reading of the relief expressed by the soldiers engaged in one of the Balkan peacekeeping missions as they changed from a UN badged to a NATO badged (& hence more robust ROE) force.

Oh, and of course I can remember the US armed forces being exceptionally glad to see some white-painted armour on a certain occasion in Mogadishu.... Oh you really don't want to go there, I have buddies who have some pointed things to say from the other side of that. We'll have to agree to disagree, though I do agree that most of their issues spring from the screwed-up political mandates they have to apply.

The boys in blue helmets did not endeared themselves to US troops in Somalia. However, my knowledge is also second hand. Again like Duck, I'll acknowledge a difficulty in fulfilling a difficult mandate ... however, the UN troops frequently seem to set aside common sense to abide by some overly fussy ROE. But I'll further acknowledge that our own ROE are often limiting to the point of stupidity ... though usually to our own detriment and not to that of our allies. Man .. I hope this makes sense. I've just come back from a pub. Edit: Removed one "like Duck"; it wasn't doing any work.

bangorstu- 11-04-2009

The problem is always with the politicians - remember if the troops break the ROE they are liable for prosecution. Calling the troops cowards is frankly disgusting. You don't seem to mind the same troops (British, Canadians, Dutch etc) when they're fighting in Afghanistan.

I wouldnt go for a pristine solid white finish id go for a light overspray or wash over a light grey,i think solid white would look a bit 'toy like' :)
