James Masters had everybody bluffed when he played Spike in Buffy The Vampire Slayer : most people believed he actually was a Brit. Gwyneth Paltrow is notoriously good at British accents (she's half-British though, I think ) and so is Robert Downey Jr.

Evidentially, you've never seen Mel Gibson's "Hamlet." No, but I have seen Tom Cruise's Von Stauffenwhatever :D I avoid Tom Cruise movies like the plague. Tim Burton, Nicolas Cage, and Pauly Shore movies are also automatically placed on the "do not see" list. IMHO, Cruise can't even do an American accent convincingly.

Generally, I like him, but in Ian McKellen's Richard III his delivery of "My Lord of Gloucester, I have too long borne your blunt upbraidings and your bitter scoffs ..." has always made me wince. Yes, I realize his character was supposed to be American within the context of that film ... but still. ::wince::

He'll also be Sherlock Holmes in the next Guy Ritchie movie : haven't seen the trailers, so can't comment on the credibility if his accent there.

The upcoming sherlock holmes movie looks like a lemon. It's nothing like the books and has tried to be full of cgi action of explosions and fighting to keep people interested(read young and brain dead). There is a recent italian version of tobruk with the Italians playing British soldiers. I'm not sure if it's available with english subtitles yet.

One thing that has always puzzled me about the American film industry is how a nation of 300+ million people, all of whom claim to be Irish at least one day a year and a few of whom actually are, can't produce a single actor who can sustain a consistent Irish accent for a complete sentence without lapsing into Glaswegian or Somerset. Even the ones who've just got off the boat from Cork seem to have had their accents surgically removed by immigration services. Yes, Jeremy Brett was the best Holmes for me, too. He seems to have been as dark and troubled in real life as the Holmes of the books was.
