Jeremy Brett is the best Holmes by far,my heart sinks when i read the words'a Guy Ritchie production' rolling up the screen  Just had a look at the trailer for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes film. Suffice to say I cringed.

This is the first I've heard about this. Cool as f**k! No matter how irritating I find Tom Hanks I've got to admit that he came up trumps with Band of Brothers and if this is just half as good I'll definitely be watching it. As for the Americancentric thing, well it's up to us to do something about it isn't it?

Come to think of it, what's the most recent British war film that's been made? Everyone else has been knocking them out by the dozen, including the Germans...

Peewee- 06-23-2009

The only thing I can think of is the Dunkirk scene in Atonement, although it's not technically a War Film, just a film with the war as a backdrop (a bit like Pearl Harbour).

Peewee- 06-23-2009

I'll shut up now.

The trailers gone due to a copyright issue!

Come to think of it, what's the most recent British war film that's been made? Sharpe's Peril ? November 2008 athough it was a "made-for-tv" film.

I managed to download the trailer. If you use real player it gives you an option to save any video you play on the net. It will save any you tube clip.

The best war films are coming out of Europe these days, IMHO - Downfall, Days of Glory etc

Peewee- 06-25-2009

But Days of Glory is awful... Dammit! You could've told me this before I bought the DVD the other day! :grr:

But Days of Glory is awful... Dammit! You could've told me this before I bought the DVD the other day! :grr: I found it very dull, but clearly other people liked it.

I suspect that budgetary constraints & the 'unPCness' of war play a role in the absence of recent British war movies. However there seem to have been a reasonable number of television series with a WWII 'theme', such as the admirable 'Foyles War.' Recent European war films seem to have concentrated on particular aspects rather than big battles - even 'Downfall' only showed tiny portions of the Battle for Berlin. Thats probably for budgetary as well as artistic reasons but a small budget doesn't preclude a decent movie -'Dark Blue World' for example, with Battle of Britain outtakes & all! Any new movie is likely to be a remake of previous films. We know that the modern Hollywood take on 'Tora, Tora, Tora' gives you 'Pearl Harbor' and 'The Sands of Iwo Jima' becomes 'Windtalkers'. Many are worried about the threatened remake of 'The Dambusters' (although if Peter Jackson is involved that would be some reassurance) ...... There are good recent American movies that encompass war - Clint Eastwood's twin Pacific War movies spring to mind, but they're not as a rule the sort of movie that commands a big budget - Saving Private Ryan being an honourable exception.

Duck Crusader- 06-25-2009

I don't know why his involvement would reassure you, considering the crappy job he did with LOTR...

Many are worried about the threatened remake of 'The Dambusters' (although if Peter Jackson is involved that would be some reassurance) ....... I thought The Adventures of Pluto Nash was the remake of The Dambusters. :eh:
