Wagram Weekend - Pics
Spent the weekend in the superb venue of the Officer's Mess of the Grenadier Guards (Wellington Barracks in London), refighting the battle of Deutsch-Wagram 1809, courtesy of David Brown (author of the General de Brigade rules), and hosted by the Loughton Strike Force club. Twenty four players commanded a total of 10,547 figures in 15mm scale, refighting the two-day action to an 'honourable draw' (Austrian moral victory), with an exciting time had by all. As a busy player, I didn't have much time for photos, but a link to 15 in a slideshow format is here: http://s448.photobucket.com/albums/qq201/Greystreak_photos/Wagram%202009/?albumview=slideshow Sample photo below: Many thanks to the organisers and fellow players for making it a fabulous weekend! :)

Now that is a lot of figures, did you win Bryce?

Der Alte Fritz- 11-02-2009

Very impressive. This is the type of game that is well suited for 15mm figures.

Wow! How did your Hessians get on, Bryce?

Wow! How did your Hessians get on, Bryce? I didn't play the Hessians, that was simply my painting "contribution" to the group effort. I actually commanded Nordmann's Advanced Guard corps on the Austrian side; in the inimitable words of Eclaireur (commanding to my right all weekend), I was to act as a "speed-bump for Davout", considering the disproportion in forces. (A duty I discharged with creditable sang froid though limited skill, losing 10 of 16 combat units, but saving all double-sixes for Brigade Morale Tests, and unit Rally tests.) Richard Jackson commanded the Hesse-Darmstadt lads, along with parts of Massena's and Bernadotte's corps. They stood up well, but were overmatched by too may Kaiserlik grenadiers at game's end.

Excellent - looks like a great weekend. The whole thoing looks superb but I do like the look of those villages particularly. And the Hessians!

Bryce, it was a pleasure to meet you - and you certainly held up Davout's corps a treat. It was a great event to be part of. I think I read somewhere that Wagram was the biggest battle of the Napoleonic era, in the sense of numbers arranged on a continuous front fighting together on the same day. That made it rather hard to have effective command and control on the day - and as far as the re-fight went, Bryce, Martin (who had part of Nostiz' cavalry reserve) and I just fought our own little battle. The French were beginning to break through in places at the end - but too late to get close to the positions that Davout achieved on the day. A big thanks to Andy and Doug for organising it  EC
