I'm currently reading the novelisation of The Alamo (2004) which is one of the many war films I'm not likely to be able to see any time soon... Its the Americans' Rorke's Drift really isn't it Heard it was better than the overly-sentimentalised and very Anglo-centric 1960 version with John Wayne et al.

i know that feeling - i've only just finished watching the last series of Torchwood which was much delayed because of 'remote control' issues :grr:

I bought series 2 of "Battlestar Galactica" on dvd 2.5 years ago, and still haven't finished it. That's despite getting the Kiwi to buy me series 3 for Christmas, just so I could make a point about never being able to watch it.... :grr:

AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! ROFL

I've zipped through "Blowing our Bridges", a memoir by an engineer officer, Major-General Tony Younger. Reasonably entertaining and an easy read; the author was at Dunkirk and D-Day but the most interesting stuff is on Korea. I'm now reading one of last year's Afghanistan books, on 3 Commando Brigade.

This month I have mostly been going all out for Burma... The Chindit War, by Shelford Bidwell - Solid but basic account of the 1944 campaign. Prisoners of Hope, by Mike Calvert - Memoir of the 1944 campaign by Mad Mike himself. Very colourful and very enjoyable. Orde Wingate, by Trevor Royle - Good biography of Wingate. Certainly a fascinating character. Still undecided if he was a nutcase or not... The Wild Green Earth, by Bernard Furgusson - Memoir of Furgusson's exploits from the 1944 campaign. Strong start but but becomes (probably understandably) a bit sketchy around the failed Indaw attack. Second half of the book is a general overview of training and techniques. Surprising that this hasn't been reprinted since the 1950's unlike his other books. Currently halfway through Italy's Sorrow, by James Holland and enjoying it immensely.

Simon Scarrows latest.

Peewee - I assume you've got John Master's 'The Road Past Manderlay' in the pile too. He takes a very (self) critical look at the second chindit operation, in which he was a column commander. A first rate book. I've also got 'Not Ordinary Men' which is a very detailed look at Kohima. Can't recall the author offhand, but a must if you're serious about this battle. Company sized attacks over a tennis court? Even the most rabid FOW fanboy would think that was pushing it! Somewhere in the pile to read is one by Gordan Seagrave, the legendary 'Burma Surgeon', which I'm looking forward to.

Galadriel- 08-23-2009

I have been reading "the Road to Jerusalem" by Jan Guillou" a very good read but I hadn't noticed despite it saying so on the front cover it was Book 1 of a trilogy! And as I had bought it in a second hand store Theo had to point out to me that it was a relatively new book and that book 2 has only just been released!! :mental: I can read honest!! :D :D
