Lovely painting.
(Just a small comment - in the last (7th) pic, the two officers, foot and mounted, seem to have acquired some static grass on their faces; the colonel appears to be drooling - probably at how good the painting is!) _________________ Muttley, you snickering, cloth-eared hound - when courage is needed, you're never around.

| lovely stuff. I really like your bases - the colours and mix of sand, stones and grass looks pretty realistic |

Thanks gents,
The static grass on the faces comes from the officers being forced to do press ups for poor leadership......
I had spotted it. Its due to the static grass being shaken off.
The basing idea was borrowed from Roly Hermans and is simply PVA, sand, brown wash, dry brush, static grass.
Thanks for the kind comments by the way. |

Hello VB
Its a game we should win (be more confident with Jones, Phillips, Byrne and Thomas fit though) but think they still have the Indian sign over us.
Glad you liked my Bavarians. Experimenting with grey undercoat, Andrea paints and the odd inking. |

Very nicely done, Rogertheguardianreader
What blue did you use on the coats? I used the Foundry "Bavarian Cornflower Blue" paints the other day and they suited my Carlists just fine, but are perhaps a little dark for Bavarian Naps. _________________ Has anyone seen my little blog? |

Hi Giles
I used Foundry Sky Blue. I think it works well.
By the way; I prefer Rogertheguardiantypospotter!

Most people paint Bavarian uniforms much too light, although it is often hard to tell from website pics as blues tends to "blanch" when photographed. I have only seen the new Foundry paints on a computer screen, but I would say that even they are probably still too light. I would use the dark shade as the middle colour and perhaps use a charcoal or very dark blue (indigo) wash.
Some examples of surviving uniforms; there is almost a greyish tinge to them:-

Cantler is generally considered an accurate depicter of Bavarian uniforms; you can see that even he produced several interpretations of "cornflower blue":

Nice painting RTB.
Ronan
I think that most Napoleonics are painted too light from the surviving uniforms I've seen. I have a view, rightly or wrongly, that the colours tended to be more greyish than we would hope for and darker too. |

I agree; the weak(er) 19th Century dyes and the coarse finish of the material gives a generally "dull" tone.
Best example I've seen was the Franco-Swiss Neuchatel Batallion; known as "les Canaris" and invariably depicted in a rich yellow, the actual cloth was more of a mustard colour. The blues used by most wargamers for French line - and more especially light - infantry are another example. All extant examples are clearly very dark, indigo.
RTB is one of the few painters I have seen who has given his Bavarians the correct (in my view) light tone for "sulphur yellow." _________________ Muttley, you snickering, cloth-eared hound - when courage is needed, you're never around.

| That Osprey French Legere book has a lot to answer for. The examples I've seen in Portugal were as you describe – very 'flat' colours and the blues really near black. |

Again, thanks for the kind words.
I've updated the blog with some more pic's; this time of some Frenchies.
Theo, I love the Discworld stuff and I think I did a good job on Nanny (and Greebo) but gutted with Vimes as I messed up. |
