SO the boys at the shop have me researching for a project of theirs and I've got a couple of questions. First, is the Warmaster stuff 6mm or 10? I've seen it referred to as both.

Second, how bad is the 'scale creep' between 10mm manufacturers?

Thanks guys!

Warmaster is 10mm, but I don't know anything about the scale creep. Also not sure whether they're 10mm foot-eye style or true 10mm, it's been a while since I saw any.

The 6mm reference might be down to various manufacturers putting together units in 6mm for warmaster derivatives such as the Ancients rules.

Hmm, Ok. Here's da cunning plan. There're going to use this:

http://www.yourmovegames.com/battleground_index.html

And instead of just using the cards they're going to get these card sized pieces of balsa and pack as many 10mm on them as will fit. I must admit to being tempted by this one, even if they are way too small.

So what I really need to know is if Pandragon, Copplestone, and GW figs will work together as between them they fill most of the army slots.

Scale creep in 10mm is pretty bad, with some models being actually 8mm and others being 12mm! But most ranges are pretty complete so its not always a problem.

Dorothy I have delved into 10mm quite a bit so in general (that is without knowing what specific armies your mates want to build) I would say that GW Warmaster will indeed work fine with Copplestone in terms of size (though some of the older GW sculpts such as the Elves are a bit stiff compared to Copplestone's style of sculpting). GW also has the plastic Battle of Five Armies miniatures in 10mm. Those do NOT work either with GW Warmaster or with Copplestone. They are just tiny in comparison. Pendraken will indeed work with GW Warmaster though to be fair I have not had occasion to compare them with the Copplestone stuff.

For my money if they can stick to Copplestone they should. If they need to fill in blanks they should try to do it from GW Warmaster OR from Kallistra (http://www.kallistra.co.uk/) . They also do 10mm and they have pics of ALL their figures. They are perfectly compatible with GW Warmaster and by extension with Copplestone. I am not terribly keen on Pendraken for their fantasy stuff (they do the best Late Romans and AWI though by far).

oh and I forgot to say that Eureka also does some 10mm minis which are lovely. Their demonic hordes are the best minis around.

Exactly what I needed to know hobbit, thank you. As of this moment am the only one who actually has stuff on order for this project, and just as predictably given my contrarian nature I went with the Roman/Carthaginian box set instead of fantasy...

We've mixed GW BoFA with the other warmaster figures and for the Ork/Gobbos at least they work fine.
Don't forget magister Militum as they have a large 10mm range of figures that works well with Pendraken and have plenty of Medievals that might fit your needs.
Kallistra make the 'Hordes and Heroes' range which were originally Pendraken figures but on strips. However they seem to be larger which is a bit weird!!

IIRC the standard base size for Warmaster is a 40mm frontage by a 20mm depth. It was designed for 10mm, but you can use 6mm.

I currently use 15mm for Warmaster Ancients, but have had to increase the base size to 60mm X 30mm in order to fit horsies on without overhanging the base.
