|
|
For anyone who wants to watch it, there is now an official trailer for the new Tom Hanks mini series The Pacific. It's due to be released early 2010 and looks every bit as good as band of brothers.
The 10 part mini series follows 3 US marines through the pacific campaign.

Oh no, Band of Brothers catapulted me into three years of frenzied 20mm WW2 buying and painting for NW Europe. I've been tempted with 28mm far east, this might just do it.
I'd love to see one of these done following the exploits of a British unit through the desert war and beyond. |

Yep, would like to see one of these done for the Brits, Blitzkrieg, the return to NW Europe, Far and Middle East, as it is, years from now, aliens/historians will think the Yanks did everything! _________________ "follow me men, I`ll be right behind you!" |

I re-watched Band of Brothers last week and thought it's a shame that no one's likely to do a British version; the Desert Rats would be a good choice. _________________ Has anyone seen my little blog? |

Actually, if I remember correctly that sort of is the British version. Many, perhaps most, of the actors portraying American soldiers were British nationals; for instance Dexter Fletcher. _________________ Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those/ Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loup'ed clothes. |

But Cornet, that only shows that Brits make better actors (I mean, how often do you see American actors trying to portray non-Americans)....

Evidentially, you've never seen Mel Gibson's "Hamlet."
Note: Yes, I know he's arguably an Aussie. _________________ Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those/ Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loup'ed clothes. |

Ever seen this? It's not terribly authentic, but entertaining none the less. _________________ Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those/ Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loup'ed clothes. |

James Masters had everybody bluffed when he played Spike in Buffy The Vampire Slayer : most people believed he actually was a Brit. Gwyneth Paltrow is notoriously good at British accents (she's half-British though, I think ) and so is Robert Downey Jr. _________________ 'But apart from the roads, the schools, the sewer system and the efficient administration, what have the Romans ever done for us ?' |

I avoid Tom Cruise movies like the plague. Tim Burton, Nicolas Cage, and Pauly Shore movies are also automatically placed on the "do not see" list. IMHO, Cruise can't even do an American accent convincingly. _________________ Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those/ Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loup'ed clothes. |

I don't know that I've ever seen Downey attempt a British accent. Generally, I like him, but in Ian McKellen's Richard III his delivery of "My Lord of Gloucester, I have too long borne your blunt upbraidings and your bitter scoffs ..." has always made me wince. Yes, I realize his character was supposed to be American within the context of that film ... but still. ::wince:: _________________ Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those/ Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loup'ed clothes. |

I believe William Tecumseh Sherman once said that the only good nazi is a Brit nazi. Or was that Jerry Bruckheimer ? _________________ 'But apart from the roads, the schools, the sewer system and the efficient administration, what have the Romans ever done for us ?' |

Downey did a fairly decent job in Restoration, where he played a late 17th century doctor opposite Sam Neill (as King Charles II). He'll also be Sherlock Holmes in the next Guy Ritchie movie : haven't seen the trailers, so can't comment on the credibility if his accent there. _________________ 'But apart from the roads, the schools, the sewer system and the efficient administration, what have the Romans ever done for us ?' |

The upcoming sherlock holmes movie looks like a lemon. It's nothing like the books and has tried to be full of cgi action of explosions and fighting to keep people interested(read young and brain dead).
There is a recent italian version of tobruk with the Italians playing British soldiers. I'm not sure if it's available with english subtitles yet. |

Basil Rathbone will always be the only 'real' Holmes to me. _________________ When you're discussing MRE's in terms of acres you know something has gotten truly screwed up. |

One thing that has always puzzled me about the American film industry is how a nation of 300+ million people, all of whom claim to be Irish at least one day a year and a few of whom actually are, can't produce a single actor who can sustain a consistent Irish accent for a complete sentence without lapsing into Glaswegian or Somerset. Even the ones who've just got off the boat from Cork seem to have had their accents surgically removed by immigration services.
Yes, Jeremy Brett was the best Holmes for me, too. He seems to have been as dark and troubled in real life as the Holmes of the books was. _________________ Muttley, you snickering, cloth-eared hound - when courage is needed, you're never around.
